Gold Winner – Tom Parker
We’re delighted that Tom Parker’s project, ‘Toxic Volcano‘ won Gold at the 39th AOP Awards, one of the biggest photography events of the year. Tom’s project focused on Kawah Ijen, an active volcano known for its striking views and acidic turquoise lake which lies on the east side of Java, Indonesia. In one of the world’s last operational sulphur mines, local workers face challenging conditions and toxic gases as large chunks of yellow mineral sulphur are hauled daily from the depths of the active volcano. Blue-tinted flames caused by burning sulphur gasses create an enticing natural phenomenon – a spectacle that also attracts tourists from all over the world.
